Matthew O'Toole (1993) is a self-taught British/Irish interdisciplinary artist working primarily across film, music composition, performance and multimedia installation.
His work explores transculturalism and memory, in particular the ways in which cultural and historical material is transformed as it moves between place, language, time and media.
In 2023, he was shortlisted for the European Media Art Platform Prize.
In 2024, his debut feature-length film, Ten Lives of a Cat: A Film about Chris Marker, premiered as a part of the Visions du Rรฉel film festival in Nyon, Switzerland and was screened at the ENSP: National Superior School of Photography in Arles, France.
In 2026, he took part in the Topography of Rescue residency in Zdolbuniv, Ukraine, implemented in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut.
His virtual installation, Triptych for Chris Marker: A Monument in Second Life, is currently supported by Centre Pompidou.
